Don’t Waste Your Money

When is it a good idea to hire a grant writer?
The short answer involves considering the following criteria:
- Is your organization a startup? If so it is not wise to hire a grant writer unless you have identified a funding source that matches up well with your services. There are some exceptions, but most funders do not give money to startups
- Are you expecting a turn-key solution from your grant write? Meaning: do you expect that just finding a good writer is enough? If so, don't waste your $. Writing a grant is easy. Winning requires a partnership and a commitment from the client. If I do not sense that level of commitment from a client, I do not accept the work. It's your baby -- take ownership!
- Do you have a track record of raising funds and getting results? If you raised $10,000 last year, don't expect a $100,000 grant. That type of growth is generally not realistic or sustainable and scares away most funders. Does your organization have past accomplishments to point to? This is important. If not, again, very tough for even the best grant writer to win you $.
