International Institute of Rhode Island

One of the great pleasures of my work is helping organizations with missions that I believe in. For the past three years I have worked with the International Institute of Rhode Island in a number of capacities. The one I enjoy most is working directly with the refugees, helping them feel comfortable in their new home state and developing leadership within their community. The first refugees that I began helping arrived from Nepal three years ago. At that time there were only 8 of them, 2 families. Today the community is 200 strong and they are thriving. They face many hardships and it is both inspiring and heart-wrenching to watch them as they strive to adapt and re-build their lives.

Every year I raise funds and help them organize outings to get to know the area better. My favorite trip was to  Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire. There were about 64 of us, Nepal-Bhutanese and American friends from Providence, RI + our African bai Omar. It was a perfect day. Sunshine, 50-60 degree temps and clear skies.

Thanks to Friends of Nepal and the International Institute of Rhode Island for helping to finance this great outing! Thanks to Ram Tiwari for organizing his community so effectively, and to Val Stori and Doug and my brother Jacob for helping lead the trip. Definitely this will be the first of an annual trip.

I really appreciate Aaron’s approach to grant writing. He is with the PI throughout the entire process from development to submission, which is critical. He takes the time to really learn about the science that is being proposed and then helps with the technical parts - the writing, organization, etc. to make the proposal make sense from the first page to the last.
