$290 Million for Environmental Justice

Over the past ~18 months Aaron has been working almost exclusively in the Environmental Justice space, helping small to midsize community based organizations (CBOs) to tap into (primarily) federal funding opportunities related to the Biden Administration’s Justice40 Initiative. As part of this effort he started a new business – Writing for Green – focused on training CBOs across the United States to access these funds. Results, to date, have been impressive: approximately $290 million in grants (ranging from $20,000 to $152 million). These funds are being used to:
- Create more open and green space in urban areas
- Mitigate the effects of climate change (such as excessive heat, and flooding) and pollution in marginalized communities that are currently – and have historically – been disproportionately impacted by environmental harms
- Establish air quality monitoring programs to provide community activists with data so they can hold polluters and elected officials accountable
- Bring solar power – and the associated economic, health, environmental and resiliency benefits to underserved communities in 19 states within EPA Regions 3, 4, and 6
- And, most importantly, to build the capacity of local CBOs and their leaders to advocate for, and create change in, their communities more effectively
