Refugees Need Us
As someone who has many friends who are refugees, or former refugees, the recent ban on Muslims from certain countries and the “temporary” halt of admittance to ALL refugees into the United States is deeply troubling to me. The current US ‘regime’ is on a path to transforming this global power — our country — into an isolationist basket case. There is no reason to fear refugees or immigrants; these are people who have lost everything. Perhaps for anyone who has never spoken to or befriended a refugee, or seen first hand what life is like in a refugee camp this comes as a shock. a refugee is someone who has lost their home and most if not all their possessions; a refugee is someone who has been persecuted and possibly tortured; a refugee is someone who has no country and has been permanently separated from their friends and family; a refugee wants more than anything, to belong. And despite all that — a refugee is someone that still clings to that thread of hope, that someday, somehow their life will improve. All that, simply based on where in the world they happened to be born. We are all human beings.
